IPU Switzerland Internship 2026

The Inter-Parliamentary Union, or IPU, offers internships at its Secretariat for selected undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students whose studies or work relate to IPU’s fields.

Quick intro

The Inter-Parliamentary Union, or IPU, offers internships at its Secretariat for selected undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students whose studies or work relate to IPU’s fields. The official IPU internship page explains that interns gain practical work experience, learn how the IPU Secretariat operates, and work under the supervision of a senior staff member. The IPU headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland. (Inter-Parliamentary Union)

Benefits

Interns who are not supported by a university, government, or other institution receive a stipend to cover basic subsistence costs. In Geneva, the official IPU page states this amount is SFr. 1,500 per month. Interns or sponsoring institutions are responsible for travel to and from Geneva, passports, visas, insurance, accommodation, and other living expenses. (Inter-Parliamentary Union)

The internship offers:

  • Monthly stipend of SFr. 1,500 for eligible unsupported Geneva interns
  • Practical work experience in an international organization
  • Exposure to parliamentary diplomacy and international issues
  • Work under supervision of IPU staff
  • Experience connected to democracy, parliaments, gender equality, human rights, peace, security, sustainable development, or youth participation

Objectives

The internship helps participants understand relevant international issues by working directly with the IPU Secretariat and learning how IPU principles, programs, and strategies are applied in practice. Interns gain understanding of IPU operations and contribute according to their background and IPU needs. (Inter-Parliamentary Union)

Eligibility criteria

Applicants can be of any nationality. They should have a university degree or be undertaking undergraduate studies. They need fluency, oral and written, in at least one IPU official language, English or French, plus working knowledge of a second language. Additional languages are an asset. Applicants should be able to adapt to an international, multicultural, multilingual environment, communicate well, work independently or in a team, show initiative and flexibility, and any IT-related knowledge is an advantage. (Inter-Parliamentary Union)

Required documents

The general internship page does not give a fixed document checklist for every internship. IPU says current staff vacancies, consultancies, internships, and contracted services are advertised on the vacancies page, and applicants should follow the process set out in each job description. The vacancies page also states there are no fees at any stage of IPU recruitment. (Inter-Parliamentary Union)

How to apply

Check the official IPU Vacancies page for current internship openings and follow the application instructions in the specific internship notice. The official general internship page is useful for eligibility and stipend rules, but the actual application process depends on the current vacancy listing. (Inter-Parliamentary Union)
